Metroid Ravenous Revealed, and Samus Is Devouring Her Enemies

As someone who has been a fan of Nintendo’s Metroid series for years, I know full well what a love-hate relationship feels like. For what felt like decades, Nintendo treated one of its biggest franchises as an afterthought, leaving fans wondering if Samus Aran would ever receive the attention she deserved. Now, over the past five years, we’ve gotten Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and the recently announced Metroid Ravenous. Nintendo is finally feeding Metroid fans again, and this time, Samus is the hungry one.

Samus is back, and she’s in trouble. Again. This time, she is being hunted by a group of deadly attackers who seemingly have the upper hand, forcing her to do things she may have never considered before. What sort of things? I don’t know, but during the Metroid Ravenous reveal trailer, Samus sounds scared and desperate before seemingly taking some delight in what she is about to do.

And apparently, what she is about to do is eat. No, seriously. Based on what Nintendo showed, Metroid Ravenous introduces a new mechanic that allows Samus to awaken her Metroid instincts and devour her enemies to gain new powers. Given everything that happened to her during Metroid Fusion, this feels like the next logical, and slightly terrifying, evolution of her Metroid DNA.

Nintendo describes the game as follows:

Take control of Samus Aran, a renowned bounty hunter ambushed by unknown attackers and marooned on an unfamiliar moon. Gather your arsenal, navigate a maze of corridors, hunt down powerful bosses, and use your newly awakened Metroid instincts to devour your foes. You’ll need to strike quickly and aggressively with beams, missiles, and more, lest you become the enemy’s next meal.

Alongside the game, Nintendo also announced a Metroid Ravenous Special Edition. It includes a copy of the game, a very sexy SteelBook case, and a Samus Metroid Suit amiibo. Unfortunately, the Special Edition has already sold out, at least at the time of writing, because of course it has.

The separately announced Metroid Chozo Statue amiibo has also sold out, proving once again that Nintendo fans will descend upon anything related to Samus within seconds. Hopefully, Nintendo produces more of both because plenty of Metroid fans, myself included, would love to get their hands on them without paying some ridiculous reseller price.

Metroid Ravenous will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
