What the Most Requested Update adds A sharper Viking England on PS5 Pro Why Ubisoft went back to Valhalla now

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has finally picked up New Game+, as Ubisoft’s free Most Requested Update went live on November 5 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

The Viking open-world RPG wrapped up its post-launch content years ago, so a fresh patch built around endgame progression is a pleasant surprise for anyone still attached to Eivor. PS5 Pro owners get a visual bonus too, with the game moving to the upgraded version of Sony’s PSSR upscaler.

What the Most Requested Update adds

New Game+ is the headline act, unlocking once you complete the Holy Day quest, and every fresh cycle pushes the difficulty higher. According to Ubisoft’s full rundown on Xbox Wire, the rest of the patch exists to make those repeat runs worth the grind.

  • New Game+, with difficulty that scales on each new playthrough
  • Mithril, a new resource for upgrading divine gear, earned in New Game+ from duplicate gear and books of knowledge or picked up in Niflheim and the Mastery and River Raid shops
  • A gear level cap of 27, more than double the old limit of 13
  • Extended Progression Mode, which counts gear upgrades, runes and masteries towards your power level
  • A stash in Ravensthorpe for spare gear and runes
  • A Rune Forge overhaul with silver upgrades from the menu, a new Superior tier and more than 300 new engravable runes

Two new achievements, a Master Assassin Naoe outfit and an Animus Hub synchronisation update round out the list. Lead game designer David Larouche says the new progression systems also work outside New Game+, so nobody has to restart the saga to use them.

His favourite change is the rune pool: almost every perk that ever appeared on an item, whether from the base game, an expansion or the store, can now be engraved. “I’m sure there are many overpowered combinations to be found!” Larouche said.

A sharper Viking England on PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro version now runs the upgraded PSSR, which Ubisoft had already added to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Engineering studio manager Priscilla Nguyen told the PlayStation Blog that it lets Valhalla’s Quality mode run at 60fps with cleaner 4K image quality.

Nguyen called the new upscaler “much crisper and more visually stable” than the temporal upscaler the game used before. According to Nguyen, none of the game’s assets had to be rebuilt; the team slotted the new upscaler into Valhalla’s existing tech instead.

Why Ubisoft went back to Valhalla now

Larouche said New Game+ had been the community’s top request for years. Asked why the team returned now, he put it plainly: “Valhalla may have released its final content update years ago, but that doesn’t mean players stopped caring about the game, and neither did we.”

The update is free and live now on console. Ubisoft’s announcements only mention PS5 and Xbox, and they do not say whether the patch is also heading to PC, so that remains the open question for Steam and Ubisoft Connect players.

For everyone else, Eivor finally has a reason to raid England all over again, and this time with the full endgame kit in tow.
